Focus on the 2024 Spotlight Report: Achieving Foundational Learning Proficiency in Africa
The 2024 UNESCO GEM-R Spotlight Report on Foundational Learning in Africa, titled "Learning Counts", focuses on foundational numeracy skills. It examines how African countries align their national vision for education with the curriculum, teacher guides and assessments. The report focuses on five countries: Niger, Mauritania, South Africa, Uganda, and Zambia.
In this month’s ‘African Learning Together’ series, Manos Antoninis, Director at the UNESCO-GEMR, analyzes how countries' curriculum development, textbook materials, teacher training, and assessment practices contribute to students building strong numeracy skills. He reflects on the need for a strong coherence between curricula, textbooks, teacher guides and assessments if countries on the continent can meet their learning goals.
