The Child-Centered Teaching Methodology of the Catch-up Program in Zambia
In the first ever version of the ADEA Africa Learning Together Knowledge series, we reviewed the implementation of the Catch-Up program in Zambia. The Catch-up is a modified version of the Teaching at the Right Level (TaRL) methodology, implemented in Zambia with resounding successes.
Catch-Up targets learners from Grade 3 to Grade 5 by dedicating one hour per day to interactive lessons. It aims to help children who are behind in their learning to ‘catch up’ with the rest of the pupils by grouping learners according to their levels of literacy and numeracy instead of their age or grade and providing instruction targeted at the learners’ ability.
But the Catch-up program has several components such as structured pedagogy, child-centered teaching methodology.
In our January edition of the ADEA Africa Learning Together knowledge series, we recorded a podcast with colleagues from the Ministry of Education Zambia and VVoB Country Office in Zambia to distil the aspects of Child-Centered Teaching methodology as a component that has ensured the success of the Catch-Up program.
